Figure 1 is an Aitoff projection of the sky in J2000 equatorial coordinates showing the 2MASS Tiles observed as of 2000 September 5. A 2MASS survey tile is a 6° long by 8.5´ wide strip that runs roughly north-south. The sky has been divided into 59,650 such tiles. A total of 58,954 tiles have been observed, or approximately 98.8% of the total survey area.

Approximately 1% of the observed tiles will be rescanned because of poor weather or sky conditions. These tiles are shown in yellow in figure above.
