Observed and Derived Parameters for Pulsars
December 1989
This table has five main sections. Sections 1 and 2 list observed data with
reference numbers given in section 2. Notes to these two sections follow section
2. Observed proper motions are listed in section 3, parameters for binary
pulsars are listed in section 4 and section 5 contains some derived quantities.
References for sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 are listed below section 4. Pulsar names
use the PSR convention - degrees of declination are truncated toward zero, and
tenths of degrees are quoted where necessary.
Descriptions of table entries are as follows:
Section 1.
Positions are true mean places (RA: h m s, Dec: d m s), equinox 1950.0; i.e.,
non-timing (FK4) positions have been corrected for the e-terms of annual
aberration. Errors refer to the last digit quoted. Where proper motions are
given in section 3, the epoch of the position is that given in section 3
(in Modified Julian Days, JD - 2400000.5).
l and b are galactic coordinates in degrees.
Periods are in a.1 seconds; errors refer to the last digit quoted.
dp/dt is the period first derivative in units of 1.E-15 s/s.
Epoch is the Modified Julian Day to which the period and period derivative
are referred.
Section 2.
DM is the dispersion measure in units of pc/cm3.
RM is the rotation measure in units of rad/m2.
WE, W50 and W10 are respectively the equivalent width, the full width at half
intensity, and the full width at 10 percent intensity of the integrated
profile, in units of msec.
S400 and S1400 are the time-averaged flux densities of the pulsed signal
at 400 and 1400 MHz, in milli-Janskys (i.e., 1.E-29 W/(m2 Hz)).
Dist is the pulsar distance in kpc, if known from a method independent of the
dispersion measure. If limits are given, the quoted value is the middle of
the allowed range.
Entries in the Note column refer to the notes following this section. An
asterisk means that there is a note for that pulsar.
The columns containing reference numbers refer to:
- Discovery announcement
- Right ascension
- Declination
- Period, period derivative and period epoch
- Dispersion measure
- Rotation measure
- Profile width
- S400
- S1400
- Distance
Section 3.
Proper motions are quoted in milli-arc-seconds/year on the sky in the R.A.
and Dec. directions. Where the origional reference quoted values in a
different coordinate system, the errors quoted here may be larger than the
true errors.
Posn epoch is the epoch (Modified Julian Days) to which the position given
in section 1 refers.
Section 4.
T0 is the Modified Julian Day of periastron passage. Errors refer to the
last digit quoted.
Pbin is the orbital period in days. Errors refer to the last digit quoted.
Asin(i) is the projected semi-major axis of the orbit in light-seconds.
Omega is the longitude of periastron in degrees.
Omegadot is the rate of periastron advance in degrees/year.
Eccentricity is the eccentricity of the orbit.
Section 5.
Dist is the distance in kpc. Where not given in section 2, the distance is
computed from the dispersion measure using the interstellar electron density
model given by Lyne, Manchester and Taylor, Mon.Not.R.A.S., 213, 613 (1985).
Where there are limits on the distance, the DM distance is quoted if it is
consistent with the limits, otherwise the limit nearest the DM distance is
given.
z is height above the galactic plane in kpc.
Bpar = RM/(0.812*DM) is the mean line-of-sight component of the interstellar
magnetic field in microgauss.
E400 and E1400 are respectively the mean pulse energies at 400 and 1400 Mhz
in units of 1.E-29 J/(m2 Hz).
Spindx is the spectral index between 400 and 1400 Mhz.
Log lum is the log10 of the pulsar radio luminosity in erg/sec calculated
from E400 assuming a conical beam, width 2pi*We/P radians and bandwidth
400 MHz.
Log Bsurf is the log10 of the magnetic field strength at the surface of the
neutron star in gauss.
Log age is the log10 of the characteristic age, P/(2*Pdot), in years.
Log Edot is the log10 of the rate of rotational energy loss in erg/sec computed
assuming a neutron star moment of inertia of 1.E45 g cm2.
Log eff is the log10 of the ratio lum/Edot.
