NRAO RAPs (WAIS-search)
NRAO-RAPS is a bibliographic listing of astronomy and astrophysics preprints received in the Charlottesville library of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory from 1986 forward. The preprints include papers submitted to scientific and technical journals and to appear in meeting proceedings; they cover observational, experimental, theoretical, review, instrumentation, image processing, and computing topics in a wide range of astronomical subdisciplines. Preprints include work by NRAO authors as well as preprints received from authors and institutions world-wide. On 1 May 93 there were 13,000 records in the database, and in 1992 we received and added records for 2,500 preprints. Citations are added as papers are published. The database is updated biweekly. The listing is meant to serve as an alerting service only; the NRAO library does NOT copy or distribute the preprints listed. The institution codes indicate either the source from which NRAO received the preprint or the affiliation of the preprint's authors.

NRAO VLA Sky Survey ( NVSS )
The NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) is mapping the sky north of -40 deg declination at 1.4 GHz. The principal data products are (1) 4 deg X 4 deg continuum maps " cubes" with three planes containing Stokes I, Q, and U images, (2) source lists, and (3) processed (u,v) data sets. The maps have 45 arcsec FWHM resolution and nearly uniform rms noise, about 0.45 mJy/beam = 0.14 K (Stokes I) and 0.29 mJy/beam (Stokes Q and U). The rms uncertainties in right ascension and declination vary from 0.3 arcsec for strong (S > 30 mJy) point sources to 5 arcsec for the faintest (S ~ 2.5 mJy) detectable sources.

IAU Symp 170, CO: 25 Years of Miliimeter-wave Spectroscopy ( 29 May - 2 June 1995, Tucson )
Interstellar carbon monoxide (CO) and several other basic molecules were first detected twenty-five years ago with the 36-foot telescope of the NRAO. These discoveries have profoundly influenced our understanding of several diverse yet related fields. Those research areas are among the most fundamental in astrophysics, and the spectroscopic information provided by CO and other molecules serves as the primary tool of investigation. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the detection of CO is a timely opportunity to bring researchers in these many areas together to review progress and discuss future directions. What have we learned from CO? What instrumentation will we need or desire? What scientific problems and challenges will we face?

Data Reduction Expert Assistant ( DRACO )
The use of large format detectors, increased access to very large astronomical databases, and other developments in observational astronomy have led to the situation where many astronomers are overwhelmed by the reduction and analysis process. Draco is a novel approach to data reduction and analysis which works in conjunction with existing analysis systems such as STSDAS/IRAF, IDL, etc. Draco takes on much of the mechanics of the process, allowing the astronomer to spend more time understanding the physical nature of the data.

Two Color (U,B) Survey of Galactic Plane ( Lanning UV Survey )
In 1969, a two-color survey of the galactic plane was begun using the Palomar 48-in Oschin Schmidt telescope under the direction of Allan Sandage. The intent of the survey was to support the Uhuru X-ray satellite (launched in 1972) in an effort to identify the optical counterparts of newly detected x-ray sources. Each plate was exposed through the Blue (GG13) and UV (UG1) filters with images offset by 12 arcsec. The exposure times were selected such that the U-B color was balanced at U-B=0 for equal sized images. The hotter the star, the bluer (larger) the UV image.

Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters ( VLA FIRST )
FIRST -- Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm -- is a project designed to produce the radio equivalent of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey over 10,000 square degrees of the North Galactic Cap. Using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) and an automated mapping pipeline, we produce images with 1.8" pixels, a typical rms of 150 Jy, and a resolution of 5" . At the 0.75 mJy source detection threshold, there are ~110 sources per square degree, ~35% of which have resolved structure on scales from 2-30" .

Hubble Space Telescope Astrometry Science Team
See how astrometry, one of the oldest branches of astronomy, uses the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the newest tools of astronomy. Interrogate our home page to find out what we do, who we are, and what we've done. Look over our shoulder as we search for planets around a nearby star. We use the Fine Guidance Sensors aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to measure star positions, study binary stars and study stellar motions. Primarily, stellar positions yield parallaxes which provide information on distance. The distances to nearby stars calibrate the entire astronomical distance scale. Monitoring star position may reveal previously unseen companions. We search for planets near Proxima Centauri and Barnard's Star. We also work to tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to an extragalactic (non-rotating) reference frame. We study binary stars unresolvable using ground-based techniques. We inspect stars to determine whether or not they are binary. We use the Planetary Camera to obtain images of stars in globular clusters. The precision with which we can measure positions is so high, that after 3-5 years a second image will show motions of stars in clusters 6 kpc distant.

Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe / European VLBI Network ( JIVE / EVN )
The European VLBI Network (EVN) was formed in 1980 by a consortium of five of the major radio astronomy institutes in Europe (the European Consortium for VLBI). Since 1980, the EVN and the Consortium has grown to include 9 institutes with 12 telescopes in 8 western European countries as well as associated institutes with telescopes in Poland, Russia, Ukraine and China. Proposals for additional telescopes in Spain and Italy are under consideration, and furthermore, the EVN can be linked to the 7-element Jodrell Bank MERLIN interferometer in the UK and to the US Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to create a " global network" . In 1993 the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE) was created, with the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (Dwingeloo) acting as the host institute. It will provide both scientific user support and a correlator facility. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) achieves ultra-high angular resolution and is a multi-disciplinary technique e.g. imaging of extragalactic radio sources, geodesy and astrometry. Phase-diverse speckle reconstruction of solar data ( PDS )
Award-winning paper: " Phase-diverse speckle reconstruction of solar data," by John H. Seldin and Richard G. Paxman, Environmental Research Institute of Michigan. --ABSTRACT-- Phase-diverse speckle imaging is a novel imaging modality that makes use of both speckle-imaging and phase-diversity concepts. A phase-diverse speckle data set consists of one conventional image and at least one additional image with known phase diversity for each of multiple atmospheric phase realizations. We demonstrate the use of a phase-diverse speckle data set collected at the Swedish Vacuum Solar Telescope on La Palma to overcome the effects of atmospheric turbulence and to restore a fine-resolution image of solar granulation. We present preliminary results of simultaneously reconstructing an object and a sequence of atmospheric phase aberrations from these data using a maximum-likelihood parameter-estimation framework. The consistency of the reconstructions is demonstrated using subsets of the sequence of images pairs.

pgperl ( - a graphics extension for perl - a macro language for pgplot - )
pgperl is a version of the Perl 4.0 language which has been combined with the PGPLOT FORTRAN library, a very popular package for plotting astronomical data. (As a glance through any issue of ApJ or MNRAS will confirm.) The details of this involve some complicated C glue routines but are transparent to the user. perl is a real C-like language with full control structures, and is very fast and efficient. All the power of perl (and believe me that is a lot) is available to extract data to plot from multitudes of files in complicated free formats.
